January Social Media Digest 2025
The holiday season is over, and developers are back to crafting new updates and features for Social Medial. AI tools and are taking over many processes. However, AI is not the only option.
Meta updates targeting options
Meta is removing the “Audience Types” option from Advantage+ catalog ads with the sales objective. However, advertisers can still retarget shoppers and find new customers using catalog custom audiences. Advantage+ catalog ads dynamically display relevant products based on user interests and behavior, maximizing ad performance. While audience selection within campaign setup is being removed, advertisers can create custom audiences to refine targeting. To use this feature, businesses must have the Meta Pixel or app SDK installed. Meta is increasingly favoring automated targeting, but advertisers still have control through custom audience strategies.

Instagram allows longer Reels
Instagram now allows three-minute Reels, expanding from the previous 90-second limit in response to creator feedback. This move aligns with TikTok and YouTube Shorts but contradicts Instagram’s past advice that shorter videos perform better. While Instagram has tested longer Reels, including 10-minute versions, it remains unclear if creators should use the extra time. Despite previous guidance favoring brevity, the option is now available for those who want to experiment with longer content.

X is trying to boost engagement with the new Tab
In January X officially launched a dedicated video tab in the app’s bottom function bar for U.S. users, replacing the “Communities” tab. This move aligns with X’s push to become a “video-first” platform, especially as video views have increased by 40% year-over-year. The company has been experimenting with this feature since early 2023, aiming to make video content more accessible. While past Twitter management limited lower-bar options to simplify the app for new users, X now appears more focused on enhancing the experience for existing users. With this shift, X hopes to drive higher engagement and open up more opportunities for video ads.
